What Is a Backsplash on a Work Table

A backsplash is the raised stainless lip along the back edge of a work table. It stands up a few inches from the table top and runs the full length of the back. It seems like a small detail, but it changes how and where you can use the table. This guide explains what a backsplash does, the common heights and when you should choose a flat top instead.

What a Backsplash Does

  • Keeps food, liquid and small items from falling off the back of the table.
  • Protects the wall from splashes, grease and knife cuts.
  • Closes the gap between the table and the wall so crumbs and water do not collect behind it.
  • Makes cleaning easier, since you wipe toward the front.

Common Styles

A short backsplash rises only a small amount. Many tables use a 1.5″ backsplash, such as the work table with undershelf and 1.5″ backsplash and the work table with open base and 1.5″ backsplash. This is enough to stop items rolling off without getting in the way.

Taller backsplashes, often around 4″ to 5″, give more wall protection and are common on tables that sit beside sinks or wet prep.

Some backsplashes have a turned back edge at the top that tucks against the wall. A few are designed to be sealed to the wall.

When to Choose a Backsplash

When to Choose a Flat Top

  • The table is an island that staff work from both sides.
  • You need to slide sheet pans or boxes on and off the back.
  • The table butts up to another table or equipment and you want a continuous surface.
  • You plan to set equipment like a mixer or slicer that needs to overhang the back slightly.

For example, the Prepline ST-3060 30″ x 60″ work table is a popular size to consider for either use. Check the product page for the edge style before ordering.

Backsplash and Overshelves

Many overshelves mount to the back of the table. On tables with a backsplash, the overshelf posts often attach behind or through the backsplash area. Check that the overshelf you choose is designed for your table style. A DOS-1848 adjustable double overshelf for work table 18 x 48 adds storage above a 48″ table.

Installation Tips

  • Push the table tight to the wall so the backsplash touches it along the full length.
  • Level the table with the bullet feet so the backsplash stays straight.
  • If your health department asks, seal the gap between backsplash and wall with food-safe sealant so it can be cleaned.
  • Do not screw the backsplash to the wall unless the table is designed for it.

Cleaning

Wipe the corner where the top meets the backsplash every day. This is where food debris collects. Use a soft brush for the seam if needed. Clean stainless with the grain and avoid chlorine cleaners that can pit the metal.
