The number of bowls in an under bar sink is not only a question of space. It decides what washing you are allowed to do at the bar, and your local health code has the final word. This guide explains what each layout is for and which of our models fit which bar.
Next to the bar sink, a stainless steel bar drainboard gives glasses a place to drain.
What each layout is for
| Compartments | Typical use | Models we carry |
|---|---|---|
| One | Dump sink or rinse point at a station | S1C-101410-F, and left or right drainboard versions S1C-101410-L-F and S1C-101410-R-F |
| Two | Wash and rinse where a separate sanitizing step is provided another way, or prep plus dump | 26 inch and 24 x 18 inch two compartment sinks with faucet, S2C-101410-L-F, and the 48 inch S2C-141010-RL-NF |
| Three | Wash, rinse and sanitize glassware by hand at the bar | 36 inch three compartment under bar sink, and S3C-101410-R-F |
All of these are in our bar sinks category, alongside one, two and three compartment sinks for the kitchen.
One compartment
A single bowl is a working sink for one bartender: somewhere to dump ice and rinse a shaker. It is the smallest footprint, and the left or right drainboard versions give wet tools somewhere to drain. It does not replace a glass-washing sink. The S1C-101410-L-F has the drainboard on the left and the S1C-101410-R-F on the right.
Two compartments
Two bowls let you separate two tasks. The 26 inch two compartment sink with faucet is the compact option, and the 48 inch S2C-141010-RL-NF adds drainboards on both sides. The NF at the end of that model number means it is sold without a faucet, so order one separately.
Three compartments
Where glasses are washed by hand at the bar, health codes commonly call for three bowls: wash, rinse and sanitize. The 36 inch three compartment under bar sink fits that into a short run. If you have a glass washer, ask your inspector whether a three compartment sink is still required as a backup.
Drainboards: left, right or both
Dirty glasses arrive on one side and clean ones leave on the other, so the drainboard should be on the side the work flows toward. In our model numbers, L means a left drainboard, R a right drainboard, and RL both.
Do you also need a hand sink
Usually, yes. Most codes require a separate sink used only for hand washing near the bar. The underbar hand sink with cabinet base is built for that position.
Before you order
- Ask your local health department how many compartments your bar needs and whether a separate hand sink is required.
- Measure the overall length including drainboards, not only the bowls.
- Check whether the model includes a faucet. F in the model number means it does, NF means it does not.
- Plan the drain connection, and ask whether a grease trap or indirect drain is required.
