A chest freezer gives more frozen storage for the money than an upright, and holds its temperature well because cold air stays in when the lid is lifted. The trade-off is floor space. This guide lays out the sizes we carry and how to pick one.

Width is not the whole story
Look at the table again: the 20, 24 and 30 cubic foot Westlake models are within two inches of each other in width. The extra capacity comes from depth and height. So if you have the wall space for a 76 inch freezer, check whether the larger models also fit before settling on the smaller one.
How much do you need
Start from what you buy frozen and how often it is delivered. A kitchen with twice-weekly deliveries needs far less than one that buys monthly to get a better price. As a habit, leave some room: a chest freezer packed to the lid is hard to search, and stock at the bottom gets forgotten.
Chest or upright
- Chest: more capacity for the cost, holds temperature well, takes floor space, and needs baskets or bins to stay organized.
- Upright reach-in: shelves at eye level and a small footprint, at a higher cost for the same capacity. See reach-in freezers.
Many kitchens use both: an upright on the line for what is used daily, and a chest freezer in the back for bulk stock.
Where to put it
- On a level floor, with the clearance around it that the manual asks for.
- In a room within the temperature range in the manual. An unheated garage or a hot storeroom can be outside it.
- Where the lid can open fully.
Before you order
- Measure the space and every doorway on the delivery path, and compare them with the dimensions on the product page.
- Check the voltage and plug type on the spec sheet against the outlet. Commercial refrigeration is normally put on its own circuit.
- Leave the clearance the manufacturer asks for around the condenser.
- Measure the depth and height as well as the width, and the doorways on the way in.
