A floor mop sink sits at floor level so staff can tip a full mop bucket without lifting it, while a one compartment utility sink stands on legs at working height for rinsing buckets, tools and laundry. What the Food Code asks for
Under the FDA Food Code (section 5-203.13), adopted in Virginia as 12VAC5-421-2250, a food establishment needs at least one service sink, or one curbed cleaning facility with a floor drain, conveniently located for cleaning mops and similar tools and for disposing of mop water and similar liquid waste. Toilets and urinals may not be used as a service sink.
Two related rules matter for placement. A service sink used for mop water may not be provided with the soap and towels required at hand sinks (12VAC5-421-3040), so it never doubles as a hand sink. And food, clean equipment and single-use items may not be stored near sources of contamination, so keep the mop sink out of prep and storage areas. Your local health department has the final say on the type and location.

The floor sinks do not come with a faucet. The product pages say to plan a floor drain connection and a faucet on the wall above, and a plumber usually makes the final connections.
One compartment utility sinks on legs
- S1C-181812-F: 24 W x 24 D x 43.5 H in. overall with an 18 x 18 x 12 in. bowl, faucet and basket drain included.
- Our one compartment laundry and utility sinks with faucet come in five sizes, 18.5 x 18, 22 x 20, 24 x 24, 30 x 24 and 30 x 30 in., with bowls from 15 x 15 to 24 x 24 in.
- Our one compartment stainless mop sinks on legs come in 18 x 18.5, 22 x 20, 24 x 24, 23 x 39 and 23 x 54 in. sizes, on galvanized legs with adjustable bullet feet. No faucet is listed as included, so plan a wall or deck faucet.
All of these are 18 gauge 304 stainless steel and list NSF approval.
Floor sink or utility sink
A floor sink is the better choice for mop water. Staff roll the bucket over and tip it, and nobody lifts a full bucket of dirty water to waist height. It also catches spills from wheeled buckets and floor machines.
A utility sink on legs is better for rinsing tools, filling spray bottles, soaking floor mats and laundry. Many kitchens with the space use both: a floor sink in the janitor’s closet and a utility sink in a back room.
Sizing and placement
- Measure the closet: the MS-253316 needs a 25 x 33 in. footprint, the MS-192212 only 19 x 22 in. A corner model fits where a rectangle will not.
- Check your mop bucket and wringer against the bowl. A large bucket with a wringer needs the bigger bowls.
- Put the faucet high enough to fill a bucket standing in the sink. A service faucet with a hose end and bucket hook is common practice.
- Plan a place to hang mops to dry above the sink, not leaning in a corner.
- Keep chemicals on a shelf near the mop sink, below and away from anything clean.
Mistakes to avoid
- Dumping mop water into a floor drain in the kitchen or a toilet.
- Putting the mop sink next to a prep table or dry storage.
- Ordering a floor sink without planning the floor drain connection.
- Adding soap and paper towels to the mop sink so staff start using it as a hand sink.

Is a mop sink required in a restaurant?
The Food Code calls for at least one service sink or a curbed cleaning facility with a floor drain. Your local health department decides which it accepts in your space.
Can a utility sink be used as a mop sink?
A utility sink can serve as the service sink if your health department accepts it, but staff then lift full buckets to the rim. A floor sink avoids that.
Do your floor mop sinks include a faucet?
