Single vs Double Speed Rail: Which One, and What Length to Order

A speed rail holds the bottles a bartender pours most, at knee height, right in front of the ice bin or sink. Getting the length and the tier count right matters more than it looks, because a rail that is too short sends the bartender to the back bar on every other drink.

What we carry

Our stainless steel speed rails come as a single rail or a double rail in seven lengths: 22, 32, 36, 42, 48, 60 and 72 inches. They have pre-drilled mounting holes, and model numbers run from SR-22 to SR-72, with a D on the end for the double version.

A single rail keeps every bottle in one row, which is the fastest to pour from. A double rail holds about twice as many bottles in the same length, at the cost of a deeper rail and a second row that is a little slower to reach. Put the bottles you pour most in the front row.

What length

As a rough guide, allow about four inches of rail for each standard liquor bottle. On that basis a 22 inch single rail holds around five bottles, a 36 inch rail around nine, and a 48 inch rail around twelve. Wider bottles take more room, so treat these as estimates and check your own bottles.

  • 22 to 36 inch: fits the front of a single ice bin or a small sink.
  • 42 to 48 inch: covers a standard cocktail station.
  • 60 to 72 inch: runs across two pieces of underbar equipment, or serves two bartenders.

Where it mounts

Speed rails are usually fixed to the front of an ice bin, an underbar sink or a work table, at a height the bartender can reach without bending far. Match the rail length to the width of the equipment it is going on. A rail that is longer than the unit behind it has nothing to fasten to at the ends.

Before you order

  • Measure the width of the equipment the rail will mount on.
  • Check the walkway behind the bar. A double rail takes more of it than a single.
  • Count the bottles you pour from most on a busy night, and size the rail to those rather than to your whole selection.
